10 arcade games I used to play #2
If you’re a Re:Retro regular, you probably noticed that I cut the previous post, 10 arcade games I used to play #1, to five entries. Well, fear not, here’s the continuation. My apologies. I had to whittle down the list to five due to space limitations (actually, I didn’t want to bore you too much). Go check out the first half of my list before you go through this one.
Galaxian
Talk about really old games. Galaxian, a 1979 fixed shooter arcade game developed by Namco and released by Midway Manufacturing, is probably the first arcade video game I played. Back then, I thought it was, uhmm, Space Invaders. So silly of me. Although the gameplay is virtually the same, Galaxian had one thing going for it: the aliens aren’t dumb beast waiting for you to shoot them down. They actually go on kamikaze runs where they dive at your ship.
Mortal Kombat
I still remember the feeling of beating the crap out of the AI (or another player) in Mortal Kombat. All that blood and gore is definitely a strong come-on to players eager to unload a lot of angst. I’m sure that Mortal Kombat is on everybody’s list of top arcade games.
Pac-Man
Yeah! This game I will never forget for two very good reasons. First, I had a Pac-Man rig at home when I was a child. Owning one definitely gave me advantages, including getting to play it the entire game sans the need for coins or tokens. Second, it’s one of the few arcade games that I actually got to finish (sort of).
Street Fighter
I’m talking about both the original 1987 arcade game developed by Capcom that let players assume the role of Ryu and the series that it spawned. Despite the dozens upon dozens of fighting games that developers churn out every year, Street Fighter and its host of characters remain strong.
Tekken
Tekken is no Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat copycat, I can attest to that. Instead of having just set moves (which can be done by pressing a sequence of keys), Tekken boasts a more intuitive process as each button of the video game cabinet corresponds to each limb of the fighter you are using. Oh, and Tekken was also the first fighting game that came in 3D.

Well, that’s it for my list. Show me yours?
