Litil Divil: Fun comes in small packages

by Joel on June 22nd, 2008

How fun is it playing a devil? Well, if you’re thinking wanton destruction, fire and brimstone, Litil Divil is definitely not for you. It’s no fun razing an entire city with millions of underworld denizens at your beck and call. It’s more fun traipsing around Hell to get the big boss his dinner.

Dinner? Yeah, dinner. That’s what your character, the Litil Divil Mutt, will be if you don’t find the dark lord some chow. What complicates matters is that the lord of Hell doesn’t want souls for dinner. He doesn’t want succubus either. What he wants is a mystical pizza (duh!) that only Mutt can get. Hey, don’t look at me; I only played the game once, back when I was, hmmm, a teenager just to torment my little half-brother.

Anyway, the fun comes in once you begin mastering the game somewhat. Fortunately, Litil Divil is easy since it borrow elements from other familiar games. If you’ve played The Curse of Monkey Island, then you’re right on track.

Here’s an excerpt from a review of the game (with some of my comments in parenthesis):

Litil Divil is well executed in most respects. The map/explore screen allows you to wind your way through the mazes of the underworld, finding hidden items, and healing agents for you to use. The on-screen map helps to keep you from getting too lost, but for long-term play, graph paper might be a help (kind of reminds me of the pen-and-paper tabletop RPG, where players needed graph paper to map dungeons).

Some of the puzzles in the game are blatantly easy. Like the fight scene with the troll guarding a bridge. All you must do is knock the guy in the leg with your stick and he goes flyin’. However, each of the games’ battles and puzzles become more difficult as you progress, keeping the fun alive, and allowing you to use your brain … not just your thumb speed.

It’s funny how the reviewer mentioned the troll fight as easy. I never did get past that stage, as making Mutt do the correct move with the bo staff/stick is hard.

Nice article. This game looks kind of fun. You ought to add what console or system is needed to play it, though. It left me wondering if its a game I can actually get.
