Karateka in pop culture
In the Wikipedia entry for Karateka, the game is mentioned as having received some notoriety as an Internet meme. Apparently, someone toyed around with the idea of rotoscoping the final sequence where the hero approaches Princess Mariko and replacing it with the hero performing MC Hammer’s dance from the hit single U Can’t Touch This.
I couldn’t find the original, uhmmm, bastardized version. I did, however, discover several copies of the cropped version titled Ninja Works It on YouTube. It’s cool, kinda reminds me of the dancing baby screensaver of the 1990s. But I can’t for the life of me think of any reason why people mistake a Karateka, or a person who practices Karate, as a ninja.
