Ultimate Sonic?

by Jonic Linley on January 18th, 2006

This is an oldie, but still a goodie. Besides, I’ve hardly posted anything about Sonic so far :o)

Menace.ch (website coming soon) has blessed these Internets with a Flash rendition of Sonic advance 2.

It’s a great effort too, with all the sprites intact (except the corkscrew loops) and some really clever level design. One thing that makes the 2d Sonic games for me is the number of set pieces you’ll find yourself being sent on. This game doesn’t dissapoint offering plenty of loops, flips and springs to send our favorite Hedgehog to his destination.

The one thing that I feel this game is let down by is its physics. Now I know we’re talking about Flash here, so I don’t know what you think I’m expecting, but Flash is very capable of producing some very convincing physics (see Metanet’s N for an example). It’s not necessarily to the detriment of the experience as a whole, but many 2d Sonic fans who are used to the way Sonic moves may be a little frustrated with this at first. Even I was frustrated with the way Sonic jumps in Sonic Rush, but perseverance is key.

‘Ultimate’ might be going a little too far, but it’s still a great effort worthy of your attention.
